Reading Black Reconstruction Session 4

April 20, 2017
Chapters 9-11

Facilitated by Robin D.G. Kelley, Professor and Gary B. Nash Endowed Chair in U.S. History, UCLA

The following materials were offered to participants after the class to supplement the group discussion.  Video of this session is below.

In his amazing presentation on The Price of Disaster, the Black Proletariat, and the Rise of Abolition-Democracy for the Reading Black Reconstruction study group, Robin D.G. Kelley mentioned (among many!) two concepts we thought might be worth further study: Dual power and the dictatorship of the proletariat.  Toward digging deeper on those concepts we shared Casting Shadows: Chokwe Lumumba and the Struggle for Racial Justice and Economic Democracy in Jackson, Mississippi by Kali Akuno, and The ‘Dictatorship of the Proletariat’ in Marx and Engels by Hal Draper.
